(Summary) A common theme I am seeing in literature about the pandemic is that researchers seem to agree that the mental health effects will last for years to come. According to Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (a top official from the World Health Organization) COVID-19 is mass trauma on a scale that exceeds World War II. This is a strong statement from an organization that has been at the forefront of this pandemic. The pandemic has effected the world at a larger magnitude than WWII and disrupted society in more ways. WHO thinks that countries need to take mental health seriously moving forward from the pandemic.

(Author) The author is a reporter for CNBC, a highly reputable news source. The source they got the information from however, is even more reputable and qualified to talk about the effects of the pandemic as the Director-General of the World Health Organization. The World Health Organization has been researching the coronavirus and battling the pandemic on the front lines and this individual can be considered an expert on the topic.

(Key Terms) mass trauma, mental health, pandemic, WHO = World Health Organization

“After the Second World War, the world has experienced mass trauma, because Second World War affected many, many lives. And now, even with this covid pandemic, with bigger magnitude, more lives have been affected...almost the whole world is affected, each and every individual on the surface of the world actually has been affected."

"And that means mass trauma, which is beyond proportion, even bigger than what the world experienced after the Second World War...And when there is mass trauma, it affects communities for many years to come."

"the mental health toll of the pandemic will emerge as a major issue in the long term, saying that “there needs to be a lot more emphasis by governments, by communities, by families, by individuals to look after our well-being.”
